Improve AI Referral Journeys
Identify where AI-referred human sessions begin, how they engage, and which measurable outcomes should be improved.
Outcome
Use this playbook when
- AI Referral Traffic is lower than expected;
- important landing pages receive visits but weak engagement;
- goal or commerce outcomes are weak for AI-referred sessions;
- referral performance changes unexpectedly;
- the team needs to prioritize AI-assisted customer journeys.
Required data
- a connected and receiving human analytics source;
- declared primary source when more than one integration exists;
- configured goals for goal conclusions;
- connected commerce source for order or revenue conclusions;
- current attribution scope and limitations.
Workflow
- Confirm Measurement Health, source freshness, timezone, attribution coverage, and incomplete-day handling.
- Separate referral volume from engagement, goals, orders, and revenue.
- Identify the AI platforms, landing pages, user journeys, and outcomes involved.
- Compare equivalent periods and account for campaign, site, analytics, or consent changes.
- Inspect destination-page quality and continuity with the likely user need: clear information, credible evidence, pricing or product detail, and a useful next step.
- Prioritize a specific journey and primary outcome.
- Implement the change and validate against a compatible period and source.
Possible actions
- improve the relevance and completeness of landing pages;
- fix broken or mismatched destinations;
- clarify product, pricing, availability, or next-step information;
- improve page performance and mobile usability;
- configure appropriate goals or commerce events;
- improve internal navigation for high-intent research journeys.
Limitations
Ordinary referral data does not identify the exact prompt, AI response, or underlying model that caused a session. Do not create prompt-to-session attribution without deterministic evidence.
Use AI Referrals & Outcomes for observed AI Traffic sessions. Brand Insights AI Referrals (Estimated) is a different estimated card and is not AI Traffic measurement.
